Trusts & Estates
The Trusts & Estates practice advises individuals and families to develop and implement an estate plan that fits their individual needs. We guide clients through the planning process and draft wills, trusts and powers of attorney consistent with each individual’s objectives. Our practice focuses on estate planning for high net worth individuals, including strategies to transfer assets to loved ones and charities in a tax efficient manner. In addition, we advise clients to develop a plan for lifetime gifts in order to minimize estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer (GST) taxes.
After a family member dies, Sonnenberg & Cunningham advises clients with respect to the probate and estate administration process. In cases involving the death of an individual with substantial assets, we can handle the filing of the federal estate tax return and any required state estate tax returns. In addition, we assist in gathering the necessary asset information and valuations in order to complete these returns. We have experience helping family members to manage the estate administration process in an organized and efficient manner. Our goal in this process is to minimize hassles and complications for our clients during a difficult emotional time.
For many of our clients, charitable donations are an important component of their estate plan and their legacy. We have experience advising clients with respect to establishing donor advised funds and private foundations in order to achieve charitable goals. In addition, we can assist clients with charitable objectives to set up a charitable lead trust or charitable remainder trust to make substantial planned gifts in the future.
